DISTRICT GOAL:
Our goal at Fostoria City Schools is to ensure the best interest of kids and safely honor the wishes of our community by doing everything reasonably possible to minimize risk and provide a safe, physical return to school for PK-12 students and staff this fall.

RATIONALE:
All Ohio schools closed for the remainder of the school calendar beginning on March 17, 2020, by order of the Governor and State Health Commissioner in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The future of PK-12 education in Ohio remains unclear as we continue to navigate these unprecedented times.  Continuing to keep children physically out of school could have long-term academic, social and emotional consequences.  Simply put, the benefits associated with reopening school buildings outweigh the risks of a continued school closure.  Fostoria City Schools is committed to returning to face-to-face instruction for the 2020-2021 school year with enhanced safety protocols in place.  The district will respond according to the status of the colored level for counties in Ohio’s Public Health Advisory Alert System as we move throughout the school year.  We will decrease the likelihood of infection with enhanced hygiene, cleaning and safety protocols, but being in a public place has a certain level of risk that cannot be eliminated.  Any student who attends school will incur some level of risk.  School district superintendents from each public and parochial school in Seneca County, along with representatives from the North Central Ohio Educational Service Center and Vanguard-Sentinel Career and Technical Center, have worked to identify common practices for the reopening of school facilities in Seneca County for Fall 2020.

This message is a reminder about the upcoming school year.  The district has sent you a letter with two registration forms.  The first form is a transportation form.  If you are wanting your student to ride the bus this year please complete and return this form to the district.  The second form was a form that is a registration if you would prefer that your child starts the year in a remote learning situation.  If this form is not returned then we are going to assume that you would prefer your child returns to the classroom following our 5 days a week model of in-person learning.  We have established a deadline of August 3rd for these in order to begin finalizing schedules, and rosters.  In order to help with the decisions we are uploading a document with more specific details to our website, as well as attaching with this email.  Please understand that this is an ever-changing situation and there are still questions that we are receiving answers to and guidance from the health department and the state.  As we receive answers we will work to share them with the community. If you have questions please do not hesitate to reach out to us and we will do our best to answer them in a timely fashion.

Respectfully,

Andrew Sprang
Superintendent
