Curriculum Director

It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I introduce myself as the Curriculum Director for Fostoria City Schools. I have had the privilege of serving in this position since August 2017. My commitment to the district is to utilize my skills as an educational leader, knowledge of curriculum and instruction and staff development to continue to move Fostoria City Schools down the path to greatness!  My goal is to serve as a resource and support for staff, students, and families alike – to be a true partner in education to ensure every child’s success.

As Curriculum Director, my door is always open, and I welcome your comments or questions. Please continue to check the district website regularly - My goal is to have helpful links, educational resources, new information, upcoming events, and additional information to help support you and your child.

Science Instructional Resource Adoption

As a district, we are committed to reflecting on where we are and where we want to go. We have made a commitment to have high-quality and engaging materials in the hands of our teachers and students. To meet the standards and to support all of our learners, each year we spend time exploring the best curriculum opportunities/instructional resources available to us for PK-12; the focus this year has been on Science resources. These new resources will be implemented during the 2024-2025 school year.

Over the course of this year we have assembled a Review Committee including representation from teachers across grades. This group has led us in the work of evaluating and deciding upon the best resources for our district. The path to selecting instructional resources is an exciting one, and we are committed to a selection process that is comprehensive in scale and transparent to all stakeholders. The Review Committee evaluated materials and selected the top 3 publishers to present more in-depth demonstrations and provide Q&A sessions to committee members. At this time the Review Committee has selected the science instructional resources that will be recommended for Board Adoption. Tera Matz, Curriculum Director will be available in the Fostoria City Schools Boardroom for public comment and to answer any questions on Thursday, June 13, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Materials will be recommended to the Fostoria Board of Education at the June 24, 2024, meeting. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Preschool Instructional Resource Adoption

In Ohio, the focus on updating all literacy curriculum to align with the science of reading requirements stems from a growing recognition of the importance of evidence-based literacy instruction. The science of reading refers to a body of research that encompasses the best practices for teaching reading, emphasizing the need for systematic and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

ORC 3313.6028(B), which became effective October 3, 2024, requires that beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, each school district use core curriculum and instructional materials in English language arts and evidence-based reading intervention programs only from the lists established by the ODEW. The district’s current preschool program, DLM Early Childhood Express, was not included on this approved list, which prompted the need to seek out a new program.

Over the course of the spring, the preschool staff and administration spent time evaluating and deciding upon the best resource for our district. The Review Committee evaluated materials and selected the top 3 publishers to present more in-depth demonstrations and provide Q&A sessions to committee members. At this time the Review Committee has selected the preschool literacy curriculum that will be recommended for Board Adoption.
